Program Overview

Lean Six Sigma is a business analytic approach for continuous improvement that optimizes performance through the reduction and elimination of variance and waste. Our four-course Six Sigma Black Belt Certification blends classroom experience with hands-on activities to provide skills that can be applied immediately, including:

  • Improving services, products, and offerings
  • Continuous process improvement
  • Information flow
  • Quality
  • Business justification analysis methods
  • Eliminating waste
  • Value stream improvement
  • Lean scheduling
  • Competitive advantage
  • Market growth
  • Business profitability

All classes are taught by Six Sigma Master Black Belts who are subject matter experts and share a wealth of real-world experience.

A digital badge will be awarded upon completion. Badges can be digitally displayed anywhere to recognize attaining a new level of knowledge.

Program Scope and Sequence

A Penn State certification is awarded upon completion of all four courses and after passing the comprehensive Black Belt certification exam. A practice exam will be given at the end of each course.

Each Six Sigma Black Belt course is approved by the Project Management Institute (PMI) to receive one Professional Development Unit (PDU) for each contact hour (21 PDUs per course).

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are awarded based on a standard of one unit per ten (10) hours of classroom contact. Each course is scheduled for 21 contact hours (2.1 CEUs per course).

Certificate is awarded upon completion of the four required courses. Courses MUST be taken in sequence and CANNOT be taken concurrently.

Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) continuous learning points are awarded based on a standard of one unit per one hour of classroom contact.

Note: The University reserves the right to cancel courses due to insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances.

Why Pursue Certification

Lean Six Sigma and Six Sigma methodologies can be applied across many industries, like manufacturing, supply chain, finance, healthcare, engineering, construction, and more.

Some key focuses of the program are creating financial returns that are quantifiable and measurable, building a more robust management team intent on rectifying waste, and replacing assumptions with statistical methods and data.

Who Should Attend?

This program may be for you if you:

  • Are frustrated with work inefficiencies
  • Often hear “that's how we've always done it”
  • Are or will be responsible for making improvements in products, services, and business processes
  • Implement continuous process improvement and projects within your organization
  • Want to earn a globally recognized certification and increase your marketability

Holding other Six Sigma belts is not required to enroll.

Program Objectives

Our certification helps you improve production processes, employee engagement, lean scheduling, and business justification analysis methods; identify risks; eliminate waste and defects by removing them; and guarantee quality while reducing overall costs and increasing profit margins.

Each course offers in-depth training on specific topics of Six Sigma and are targeted toward team members responsible for implementing continuous process improvements in products, services, and business processes.

Course Descriptions

SYSEN 5606 Theory and Application

This course establishes Lean Six Sigma principles to equip students with practical tools for driving organizational performance and innovation. Students learn to diagnose inefficiencies, implement sustainable improvements, and communicate data-driven solutions through hands-on exercises, real-world case studies, and applications of systems thinking, facilitation skills, and AI-enhanced analytics. The course culminates in individual project presentations demonstrating measurable results and applied mastery of the DMAIC framework. Designed for working professionals, SYSEN 5606 emphasizes strategic impact, cross-functional collaboration, and personal leadership development to get real-world results.

SYSEN 5605 Continuous Process Improvement

This advanced module in Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification focuses on continuous process improvement through the application of the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) methodology. Participants will engage with tools such as Value Stream Mapping, Statistical Process Control, and Root Cause Analysis, while exploring organizational behavior concepts like emotional labor and psychological contracts. The course blends quantitative and qualitative techniques, including survey design, training needs analysis, and real-world project execution. Designed for professionals seeking impactful, data-driven solutions, this course culminates in individual project presentations and measurable return-on-investment outcomes.

SYSEN 5609: Basic Quality Control

This course equips students with advanced tools and methodologies for achieving process excellence and sustainable organizational performance. Through hands-on training in statistical analysis tools, control charts, FMEA, Design of Experiments, and AI-enhanced quality techniques, students learn to diagnose root causes, reduce variation, and drive measurable results. The course integrates both quantitative and qualitative approaches, including customer journey mapping and ethnographic observation, to align solutions with customer needs and strategic goals. Participants complete individual projects that demonstrate mastery of Lean Six Sigma principles and their application in real-world environments.

SYSEN 5625: Lean Six Sigma Customer Driven

This final course in the Six Sigma Black Belt Program explores how organizations can improve performance by aligning operations with customer expectations and business priorities. Through hands-on analysis of Voice of the Customer, financial impact, compliance frameworks like Sarbanes-Oxley, and practical action planning, students develop skills to identify enterprise gaps and drive measurable improvement. Emphasis is placed on stakeholder influence, emotional labor, and diversity as key elements of customer-centric continuous improvement. The course culminates in an applied practicum where participants present real-world recommendations supported by lessons learned and data-driven insights.
