Supervision Essentials Series

The Supervision Essentials Series is a training series designed to help you 
become a more effective and efficient leader. The classes are designed for first level supervisors, managers new to supervising others, individual contributors likely to move into supervision, or experienced managers who would like a refresher. The updated content in the modules of this series includes topics that reflect current challenges faced by today’s managers in the workplace.

Class:Meeting Supervisory Responsibilities
Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify the challenges involved when moving into supervision and state the expectations generally held for supervisors.
  2. Describe the key roles, skills and practices associated with 
    effective supervision.
  3. Explain the supervisor's responsibilities for operating from a base of values and ethics.
  4. Contrast traditional versus new management assumptions, as well as control versus developmental management styles.
  5. Assess your supervisory strengths and developmental needs.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the process model of interpersonal communication.
  2. Define and give examples of the verbal and nonverbal elements of a message.
  3. Explain common barriers and problems in interpersonal communication and identify ways to improve communication quality.
  4. Describe and demonstrate effective listening techniques.
  5. Explain what supervisors can do to meet their responsibilities for keeping employees informed.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the supervisor’s role in orienting and developing new employees.
  2. Identify situations and conditions that indicate a need for employee skill development.
  3. List the steps in traditional on-the-job training and describe the factors to consider in using structured training for skill development.
  4. Explain the different ways that coaching can be applied to develop employees.
  5. Describe the characteristics and practices of supervisors who effectively support employee development.

Learning Objectives:
  1. View time as the “most valuable resource” and identify your current time-use habits.
  2. Identify top-priority tasks and responsibilities and organize around priorities.
  3. Maintain focus on important tasks and priorities and develop daily and weekly plans to better control use of time.
  4. Identify personal time wasters and develop ideas to avoid, reduce or eliminate them.
  5. Usa a goal-based planning approach to improve the application of time to priorities.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Define interpersonal conflict and describe the typical causes of this type of conflict in today’s work organization.
  2. Describe the conflict resolution process and contrast win-win and win-lose process orientations.
  3. Describe behaviors that support positive resolutions to interpersonal conflicts.
  4. Analyze conflict situations and develop plans for positive resolutions.
  5. Follow guidelines for interacting with others to resolve conflicts effectively and positively.

  5. Explain what is meant by the "self-fulfilling prophecy" and why it is important for supervisors to set high standards for employee performance.

Cancellations and refunds

Payment is due upon registration. Students may request a registration cancellation through the start date of the course. A $25 cancellation fee will apply. No refunds will be given for withdrawal requests after the course start date. The University reserves the right to cancel course selections. If the course is cancelled, the student will be issued a full refund.
