Spaghetti dinner on Jan. 27 to benefit Penn State DuBois baseball

The Penn State DuBois baseball team will host a spaghetti dinner from 1 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 27 at Luigi’s Villa, located at 800 West Weber Ave. in DuBois. The cost per dinner is $10, with all proceeds benefiting the team’s spring trip to the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Palumbo Charitable Trust Open Doors Scholarship generates a half million dollars

The A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust has given $150,000 to establish an Open Doors Scholarship at Penn State DuBois. Having made their initial gift before June 30, 2018, the trust took advantage of the unprecedented 2:1 matching opportunity that was available with the Open Doors Scholarship Program. This means the University matched the Palumbo gift with an additional $300,000, creating a full $450,000 endowment.

DuBois Educational Foundation establishes Open Doors Scholarship

With a $70,000 gift, the DuBois Educational Foundation (DEF) has established the DuBois Educational Foundation Open Doors Scholarship at Penn State DuBois. As part of the recently concluded Open Doors Scholarship Program, Penn State has made a 2:1 matching contribution to the DEF gift, creating a $210,000 endowment.

Penn State DuBois celebrates fall commencement

Fall 2018 graduates from Penn State DuBois made their official transition from students to alumni during fall commencement ceremonies held Dec. 13 in the campus gymnasium. Chancellor M. Scott McBride presided over the ceremony, with Professor of Chemistry Arshad Khan serving as faculty marshal. Barbara Reinard, assistant teaching professor and winner of the 2017-18 DuBois Educational Foundation Educator of the Year Award, offered the commencement address.

Sign Language courses teach individuals to ‘listen with their eyes’

This spring, in addition to the 10-week introductory class, Penn State DuBois will also offer a six-week intermediate class for those who would like to increase their sign language skills or have specific needs for their job. Marla Jo Ball is the instructor for both classes being held in DuBois. They are both Act 48 approved for continuing education credits.

Professor emeritus 'centers' new book on examining literary patterns

Building upon his long career in literary research and education at Penn State DuBois, Richard Kopley, distinguished professor of English emeritus, has spent his time in retirement breaking new ground in the study of literature. His latest book, “The Formal Center in Literature: Explorations from Poe to the Present,” examines previously undiscovered and undiscussed structures in composition that are used by some of recent history’s most notable authors in various works.

Faculty member to share economics expertise on BBC program

Penn State DuBois’ Associate Professor of Economics Evelyn Wamboye has been invited by the British Broadcasting Corporation to share her expertise on economic issues in Africa. She will take part in a broadcast interview to be aired Dec. 5, for the BBC’s “Focus on Africa” radio program, to discuss how African countries can create employment for their booming populations.

DuBois students donate holiday care packages to those in need

This holiday season, students in the Human Development and Family Studies Club at Penn State DuBois continued their tradition of helping local individuals in need. Club members purchased items and assembled holiday care packages. They delivered those packages to area shelters that serve people who have been displaced from their homes, or who are victims of domestic violence.
