Penn State DuBois Head Baseball Coach Tom Calliari has put in some extra innings of his own in recent months, working overtime to recruit the greatest talent he can find to fill up his team roster. The team will play a full schedule beginning in the spring of 2016, but will first offer a preview of things to come with a three game "Fall Ball" season starting on Sept. 12, as DuBois squares off against Westmorland Community College at Showers Field.
More than 230 students from across the country and around the globe officially became part of the Penn State DuBois community Aug. 20 at Convocation ceremonies and New Student Orientation on campus.
More than 140 freshman, plus faculty and staff leaders, participated in the annual Penn State DuBois Outreach Day on Aug. 21. Each year, as part of New Student Orientation, new students volunteer at various charitable and community organizations throughout the area, giving students a look at the importance of service, while lending a hand to local charities.
Students at Penn State DuBois have launched a collegiate chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), and they're gearing up to hold their first major fundraising event in September. Dubbed the Penn State DuBois Strutters, the new organization is one of only two collegiate chapters of the NWTF in Pennsylvania, with the other being based at Penn State's University Park campus.
Students in the Penn State DuBois Wildlife Technology Program have joined the efforts of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the Jefferson County Conservation District to provide habitat development and improvement in and around Kyle Lake, a man-made body of water located in Washington Township, Jefferson County. Students recently helped representatives build turtle basking platforms that will be placed in the lake to help sustain the local population of painted turtles.
Penn State DuBois wildlife technology student Donna Morello, of Brookville, has received a $500 gift card to the Penn State Bookstore as the winner of the Blue and White Society Bookstore Sweepstakes. Blue and White society members who renewed their membership this year were automatically entered in the drawing. Three $500 gift cards were awarded University-wide.
Under the beating wings of eight monarch butterflies released from the campus monarch nursery, Penn State DuBois officially turned 80 years old on Friday, Sept. 18. The campus community celebrated the milestone with a birthday party and picnic on the campus lawn. The occasion was especially marked by the butterfly release, one monarch for each decade.
Around 50 middle school and high school students from six area school districts, as well as representatives from area industry, took part in Manufacturing Day at Penn State DuBois Oct. 2. All guests had the opportunity to take part in a product design exercise using computer drafting tools, received tours of campus engineering labs and production labs, and learned more about engineering degree programs offered at Penn State DuBois.
More than 40 Penn State DuBois men wore high heels for the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event Sept. 30. The men's march is meant to raise awareness of the battle against rape, sexual assault and gender violence.
