The Counseling Center at Penn State DuBois

College Students often encounter a great deal of stress, e.g. academic, social, family, work, and financial. While most students cope successfully with life's demands, sometimes these pressures become overwhelming and unmanageable. Students might feel alone, isolated, helpless, and even hopeless. These feelings can easily disrupt academic performance and can result in harmful behaviors, including substance abuse, self-harm, and suicide attempts.

Many common student concerns include:

  • Difficulty in adjusting to college
  • Problems with friends and/or family members
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Grief or loss
  • Self-confidence
  • Lack of motivation
  • Time management
  • Stress management
  • Sexual identity issues
  • Substance abuse
  • Eating disorders
  • Physical/Sexual/Emotional abuse
  • Concerns about your major, career, and/or future
  • Difficulty in concentrating or studying
  • Trouble coping with academic pressures
  • Uncertainties about personal values and beliefs

If you experience or deal with any of these issues or any other stressors, you're urged to make an appointment to talk with the Campus Counselor. We're here to help you, and you matter to us.

What services are provided?

The Counseling Center at Penn State DuBois offers a variety of confidential and free services for students, including:

  • Individual counseling
  • Community referrals https://www.pa211.org/agency/6216/7590/
  • Programs on topics of well-being
  • Additional counseling and support services, as needed

How is student confidentiality protected?

All information shared between the student and the counselor is strictly confidential. All calls and requests for information are strictly confidential. No contacts are made without the student's written permission, unless the student is a risk to himself/herself or others.

What rights do I have if I come to counseling?

Students eligible to receive services at The Counseling Center through Penn State DuBois have the right to:

  • Impartial access to treatment regardless of race, religion, sex, age, disability, or lifestyle preference.
  • Ask questions about the process of counseling and procedures used.
  • Information regarding counselor credentials and training.
  • Expect that all information disclosed in counseling will be kept confidential with the exception of information related to danger to self or others, or to the abuse of a child or incapacitated adult. In some cases (e.g., divorce, child custody) information has been released upon court order.
  • Participate in the planning of treatment.
  • Terminate counseling at any time, unless mandated to participate due to conduct or legal issues.
  • Review treatment records, unless in the view of the therapist, this would be harmful to the client.
  • Discuss a grievance with the Director of Student Affairs about services offered.

 Diversity

The Counseling Center welcomes all students and embraces a philosophy respectful of diversity. We are supportive of students' gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, cultural and religious backgrounds, and abilities. We are committed to helping all students deal with discrimination and identity issues.

How do I make an appointment for counseling?

To schedule a confidential, one-on-one appointment with the campus counselor, please contact the Counseling Center at Penn State DuBois via email: [email protected] or call and leave a message at (814) 375-4832.  Talking with someone even about small problems is a great step toward preventing chronic issues.

We are here to help. U Matter!

Consultation

Consultations by phone or appointment are available for parents, students, faculty, staff members, or friends who wish to speak with the Campus Counselor about a student or to learn more about counseling services and referrals.

Sometimes a student or concerned other may just need some clarification regarding whether what they are experiencing is healthy and normal or represents a concern that could benefit from or require professional treatment. For more information, please call the Counseling Center at 814-375-4832 to speak with someone who can help.

NOTE: While we can talk with you about concerns for a student, due to ethical and legal requirements for confidentiality, the Campus Counselor will only be able to share specific information (i.e. student's attendance at sessions, issues, or treatment recommendations) if they have signed a written release consenting for that to occur.
