Teaching and Learning with Technology @ DuBois

We are hosting a Teaching and Learning with Technology @ DuBois event on April 4th beginning with lunch at noon.  I am hoping that all interested faculty and staff will consider attending.

The afternoon will be launched by our Chancellor, Jungwoo Ryoo, Ph.D., and followed by concurrent sessions focused on Teaching, Learning & Technology presented by our own faculty at DuBois as well as invited guests from the Teaching and Learning areas across Penn State.  We will have a mix of online and in-person presenters, staying true to the fact that we can learn anytime, anywhere.

Please RSVP using this form https://forms.office.com/r/rKH9bgzVPy so we can have a head count for the event and for lunch. I would like to provide a lunch count to catering by 3/29, so if you can respond by then with that information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Schedule

All sessions will be Zoomed and recorded.

LUNCH & OPENING GREETING from Penn State DuBois Chancellor Jungwoo Ryoo, Ph.D., will be hosted in DEF 209 from 11:45am to 12:25pm

12:30pm to 12:55pm Sessions

Creative communication teaching techniques for IT students.
Presented by Jason Long
Room 209 DEF or https://psu.zoom.us/j/95889279039

Stories Matter Sharing
Presented by Nicholas Smerker
Room 202 DEF or https://psu.zoom.us/j/91993504810 (Zoomed session from University Park)
Information in the form of stories can be a powerful means of promoting comprehension and retention. Resources from Media Commons make it easy to assign students story-based projects that encourage them to show their audience as opposed to simply telling them. Through traditional video and new immersive technologies, course topics can come alive while also imparting digital fluency skillsets. Learn more in this preview of April 18th's Storytelling Made Easy session at the Library at the DuBois campus.

1:05pm to 1:30pm Sessions

First offered in 2017, the course has provided 37 students with the opportunity to lead original undergraduate research projects. The course meets weekly throughout the spring semester and covers all aspects of completing a research project. By the end of the semester the students have completed their projects, produced a scientific paper, and are prepared to present.

Anthology A11y Pilot in Canvas: How Instructors and Students Are Leveraging Accessibility Tools
Presented by Jennifer Wagner
Room 202 DEF or https://psu.zoom.us/j/91993504810 (Zoomed session from University Park)
This session discusses the pilot of the "Anthology Ally" tool in Canvas which is on track to be enabled in Fall 2023 for all courses at the University. The tool, which was piloted in courses across multiple campuses for Spring 2023, allows students to access alternative formats of course content, including MP3 audio files, tagged PDFs, Braille, EPUB digital files and others. Accessibility tools also allow instructors to identify common accessibility issues and remove barriers to their content. During the session, we will demo different parts of the tool and discuss the Fall 2023 launch.

1:40pm to 2:05pm Sessions

Bringing Research into the Classroom
Presented by Sarah Pierotti

Inclusive Pedagogy
Presented by Amy Kuntz
Room 201 DEF or https://psu.zoom.us/j/98989024551 (Zoomed session from University Park)
Inclusive pedagogy sets the stage for a learning environment that provides equal opportunities for all students to have a successful learning experience and a sense of belonging (Dewsbury, 2017). This session will focus on using instructional technologies such as Flip, Google Docs, Canvas, and more tied with inclusive pedagogy with such items as a co-created portion of a learner-centered syllabus, checking name pronunciation and pronouns, and soliciting feedback from the students with a DEIB perspective. Additional aspects include image repositories and open educational resources to have inclusive materials beyond affordability to that of representation including students seeing themselves adequately represented in course content/readings.

Tech Tools Talks
Presented by Marly Doty
Room 202 DEF or https://psu.zoom.us/j/91993504810
Learn about how technology was embedded as an assignment to explore available tools within a course. This assignment could be tailored for various fields and courses.
