DuBOIS, Pa. — Penn State DuBois Continuing and Community Education is offering two computer numerical control (CNC) training courses, scheduled to begin in mid-August, designed to equip job seekers and current employees with the skills needed for in-demand careers in the region’s advanced manufacturing sector.
Both the CNC Lathe Entry Level and CNC Mill Entry Level courses are delivered on the Penn State DuBois campus, providing students with a high-impact combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience. Courses are taught by some of the region’s top engineering educators and veteran CNC operators. Each course can be taken individually, or together to complete a comprehensive CNC metal machining course.
The CNC Lathe class is offered on a state-of-the-art Smart Machine Tool NL 1500 CNC Turning Center, featuring industry-standard FANUC controls. The CNC Mill course is also taught using a new Smart Machine Tool CNC mill equipped with FANUC control panels.
Each course offers 57 hours of instruction. Students who complete both the lathe and mill courses can gain proficiency in operating and programming both machines in just 84 total hours.
“We are excited to offer this kind of workforce training using industry-standard equipment,” said John Brennan, director of Continuing and Community Education at Penn State DuBois and Penn State Altoona. “By partnering with local manufacturers, we’ve built programs that directly support the skills employers are looking for.”
The comprehensive curriculum includes:
- Industrial math, including geometry and trigonometry
- Blueprint reading
- Geometric dimensioning and tolerance
- Metrology
- Statistical process control
- Intro to CNC
- CNC operations
- Basic G and M codes and machine functions
- CNC programming and set-up
- CNC troubleshooting
Courses are ideal for individuals entering the manufacturing field or for companies looking to upskill their workforce. Class sizes are limited to ensure personalized instruction.
Companies or individuals interested in enrolling in either course are encouraged to contact Brennan to reserve their spot. Those not sponsored by an employer are encouraged to contact their local CareerLink office to inquire about financial assistance for tuition.
