DUBOIS, Pa. — The Penn State DuBois Delta Mu Sigma Honor Society has announced award winners for the 2020-21 academic year, with recognition of the 82nd Annual Honors Convocation Awards. Though current social distancing requirements have caused the official awards ceremony to be cancelled, students, faculty and staff still wish to recognize those chosen to receive awards.

Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer M. Scott McBride stated, “Each year our campus faculty and staff take this opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements of our outstanding students. However, like last year, the COVID-19 pandemic forces us to present these awards remotely to ensure the safety of our campus community while allowing families and friends to publicly applaud the accomplishments of our outstanding students.

“We are extremely proud to present several prestigious awards, both for distinguished academic accomplishment and for service to the campus and community. These awards recognize those students who consistently go the extra mile and push themselves to achieve more than they ever thought possible. These are the students who stand out for their successes and the noteworthy impact that they have had on others. We are proud to honor them with this distinguished recognition.”

Delta Mu Sigma is dedicated to enriching student life at Penn State DuBois by encouraging scholarship and involvement in campus and community activities.

Awards at the Honors Convocation recognize students for a wide range of accomplishments, from academic excellence, to overcoming hardships to succeed. Members of the staff and faculty are also celebrated for their commitment to supporting students and for their service to the campus and community. The event is organized each year by members of the Delta Mu Sigma Honors Society.

Delta Mu Sigma, a scholastic honor society, was chartered in 1939. The sole chapter of this society is located at Penn State DuBois. Members of the society are from all colleges represented at the campus. Delta Mu Sigma is dedicated to enriching student life at Penn State DuBois by encouraging scholarship and involvement in campus and community activities.

As stated in the Delta Mu Sigma constitution, membership in the society shall be based upon scholastic requirements, active participation, and service to the Penn State DuBois campus and community.

Membership into Delta Mu Sigma is open to full-time and part-time Penn State DuBois students who have completed 12 or more credits. Current members select the new members based on the scholarship and service requirements set forth in the constitution. Lifetime membership is granted to those students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and involvement in extracurricular activities both on campus and in the community.

Academic Excellence in Chemistry

Academic Excellence Awardee: Zack Vandervort

The nominator writes: “Last year (2020) I came up with a theoretical model that predicts when the Covid infection and death curves will level off based on initial sets of data. I needed someone to obtain data for different countries from the CDC site and apply the model to show its applicability. Zack wrote excellent computer codes to do exactly that. Now, one can pick any country from the CDC site, and Zack’s program will show the original data as well as the predicted results with time when the infection and death curves are expected to level off. Future students who will work on this project will  certainly benefit from Zack’s work. We do not give Chemistry award every year and have high expectations from those who we nominate for the award. Zack certainly met that standard and truly deserves this year’s chemistry award.”

I have met few other student athletes as open, understanding, patient and respectful as Franklin."

Laurel Award

The student recipient best represents our campus through activities, social attitudes and service to the campus.

Laurel Awardee: Brianna Shaw

The nominator writes “Brianna has been involved in so many things on this campus like Leaderquest, CPE, MLK Day of Service, Alternative Spring Break to Arizona Navajo Reservation and Lion Ambassador; however, her most notable legacy on campus will be THON. She served as this year’s THON chair but has been involved from the moment she  arrived on campus. During an extremely difficult fundraising year she and her team placed 6th in the fundraising for the Commonwealth Campuses. On top of her numerous leadership experiences, she is also frequently attending the activities on campus, has worked for the Office of Student Engagement and still maintains an excellent GPA.”

Erica is focused and revered by other students for her dedication and accountability.  Moreover, she is consistent in her interactions and performance inside and outside of the classroom. For the past year, Erica has held the position of President of the Human Development and Family Studies Club which was not an easy role given the challenges presented by the pandemic. Erica has also seized other opportunities to develop herself as a leader on campus such as by serving as an Orientation Leader, Lion Ambassador, Undergraduate Research Ambassador, and Teaching Assistant. In regards to service last year, Erica took part in the Alternative Spring Break program to Navajo Nation as an engaged scholarship opportunity with poverty, homelessness and cultural preservation. In summary, Erica  has left a positive mark with her peers, our local community she served through the Alternative Spring Break trip, and to our campus.
