Penn State’s Commonwealth Campuses and the state’s community colleges have announced a new collaboration aimed at expanding educational opportunities in Pennsylvania and removing barriers to degree completion among college students. The collaboration builds upon long-standing relationships between the campuses and the community colleges and a shared commitment to access and affordability in higher education.
At an event held on Oct. 31, leaders from the Student Philanthropy Network announced that the class of 2024 has voted to create the University Park Undergraduate Association Basic Needs Endowment as their class gift. The fund will provide sustained support for students facing hardships in pursuit of their degree.
Since 2017, the Jay and Betty Pifer Scholarship has supported students at Penn State DuBois and in the College of Engineering who are striving toward their goal of earning a degree. First endowed with a $25,000 gift from the Pifers, the scholarship has now grown to have a profound impact that honors the great legacy of the Pifers.
With a pledge of $50,000, the Symmco Foundation has created the Symmco Foundation LaunchBox Endowment at Penn State DuBois. The purpose of this endowment is to provide unrestricted support for the operational and programing needs of the North Central Pennsylvania LaunchBox powered by Penn State DuBois.
A planned gift will be used to establish an endowed undergraduate scholarship to benefit students in need at Penn State DuBois. Ted M. McKinney has committed $500,000 to create the Frank A. Palmerino Memorial Scholarship at Penn State DuBois in honor of his late companion.

Charles E. Hunnell, of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, has pledged $200,000 to establish the Florence Vernon Hunnell Scholarship at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus. The scholarship, named for Hunnell’s late mother, will benefit full-time students at the campus, with preference given to Greene County residents.
